Icon Art Installation

Overview
In collaboration with Cree and the Raleigh Convention Center, I was commissioned to create a large-scale art installation for the breezeway connecting the Convention Center and the adjoining hotel. This high-traffic space called for something bold, engaging, and memorable.

Challenge
The request was to develop an installation that communicated themes of sustainability and innovation in a visually striking way. The work needed to capture attention, spark conversation, and transform a transitional space into an experience—all while being practical to fabricate and install.

Approach
I was personally invited to take on this project and began by presenting three concept directions. Each explored a different visual approach using a series of eco-inspired icons. The selected concept centered on oversized wooden letter blocks emerging from the walls and suspended in midair, bringing a sense of playfulness and dimensionality to the corridor.

To bring the design to life, I partnered with Moss Fabrication, collaborating closely on the engineering, construction, and installation of the custom, fabric icon boxes. The project required precision in both design and execution to ensure structural safety, durability, and visual impact.

Results
The installation was delivered on time and on budget, exceeding expectations from all stakeholders. Though originally intended as a temporary installation, it remained in place for nearly a decade—a testament to both its quality and the delight it brought to visitors.

Impact
The Icon Art Installation not only elevated the aesthetic of the Raleigh Convention Center breezeway but also reinforced Cree’s identity and the Convention Center’s commitment to forward-thinking design. The overwhelmingly positive reception highlighted the power of creative collaboration in turning functional spaces into memorable landmarks.
